Why Plants?
The science is clear: a diet rich in whole plant foods is the single most effective way to reduce your risk of chronic disease and extend your healthspan. But why does it work? The answer lies in biochemistry.
Phytochemicals
Plants produce thousands of different chemical compounds — called phytochemicals — to protect themselves from predators, UV radiation, and disease. When we eat these plants, we benefit from many of those same protective effects. These include flavonoids, carotenoids, glucosinolates, and polyphenols.
Antioxidants & Inflammation
Chronic inflammation is at the root of almost every modern disease — heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and cancer. Plant foods are packed with antioxidants that neutralise the free radicals that cause oxidative stress and inflammation. The more colourful your plate, the wider the range of protective compounds you consume.
Fibre & the Microbiome
Fibre is found only in plants. It feeds the trillions of bacteria in your gut, which in turn produce short-chain fatty acids (like butyrate) that reduce inflammation, support immune function, and protect against colon cancer. A typical Western diet provides about 15g of fibre per day. A whole food plant-based diet provides 50-80g.
Protein Without the Problems
Animal protein, particularly from meat and dairy, is associated with higher levels of IGF-1 — a growth hormone that accelerates ageing and cancer growth. Plant proteins come packaged with fibre, antioxidants, and thousands of protective phytochemicals. Complete proteins can be obtained by eating a variety of plant foods throughout the day.
